All Things Small and Green has helped the Cognitive Science Society create “their” new grove.
Details of the new grove can be found at the following society’s webpage: https://cognitivesciencesociety.org/cognitive-science-society-grove/
Several important points are made:
1- all conferences, even online, have a carbon costs which need to be offset. During the Covid-19 pandemic, more and more conferences are being planned online. Until now, we have focused on getting scientists and academics to offset their carbon emissions caused by the traveling to the conference sites. Now that we are no longer traveling and switching to online conferences, we must bear in mind that whether online or face-to-face, conferences have environmental costs that need offsetting.
2- another point made is that planting trees abroad might be wonderful but has risks: poor incentive to maintain plantations long-term, poor economic returns, and unstable land ownership structures. Planting closer to home in deforested area such as the Scottish Highlands has advantages that should be considered.
