If schools and stores are in the vicinity, try not to use a car: walk/cycle to them. I know walking with a heavy load of shopping is no fun, but consider buying a shopping cart. If you can (sometimes difficult when you live in a suburb), try to do with just one car, not two or more. Use public transportation whenever you can. And maybe, go electric or hybrid, if you can afford it.
